David Vonderhaar, a well-known and long-serving developer in the Call of Duty franchise, has left Treyarch and Activision after 18 years and 8 Call of Duty games. Vonderhaar did not disclose the specific studio or project they would be joining but confirmed they would remain in the games industry. In a statement on LinkedIn, Vonderhaar expressed gratitude to colleagues at Treyarch and the Call of Duty community for their support and enthusiasm over the years. They mentioned moving on to work on a “rare and unique opportunity.”
Vonderhaar’s departure comes as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2023) was officially unveiled, with a release date set for November 10. Modern Warfare 3 (2023) serves as a direct sequel to Modern Warfare 2 (2022), featuring a campaign that continues where its predecessor left off. The game introduces “open combat missions” that offer players choices in how they approach certain story quests and includes modernized versions of all 16 launch maps from the original Modern Warfare 2 (2009). New post-launch seasons will bring over 12 fresh 6v6 arenas to the game.
