Apple unveils the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus

Apple today unveiled the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, which come in two sizes — 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches — and have a sophisticated design with amazing camera enhancements and game-changing new safety features. The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus includes a strong camera system that includes the Main and front TrueDepth cameras, the Ultra Wide camera for unusual viewpoints, and Photonic Engine – an improved picture pipeline. Both versions have the A15 Bionic processor with a 5-core GPU, which provides exceptional speed and efficiency for demanding applications and is created with privacy and security in mind. The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus are the first devices in the industry to have important safety features such as Crash Detection and Emergency SOS via satellite. This iPhone series is more sophisticated than ever before, with incredible battery life, industry-leading durability features, and super-fast 5G. The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus will be available in the following colors: midnight, blue, starlight, purple, and (PRODUCT)RED.

A Beautiful and Durable Design with Amazing Battery Life

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, available in the traditional 6.1-inch size and a striking new 6.7-inch size, offer a sturdy and elegant aerospace-grade aluminium body in five attractive finishes. The iPhone 14 Plus’s bigger display is ideal for streaming movies and playing games, and it has the greatest battery life of any iPhone. Both versions include a redesigned internal architecture for improved thermal efficiency, as well as stunning Super Retina XDR screens with OLED technology that enable 1200 nits of peak HDR brightness, a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and Dolby Vision.

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus also include the robust Ceramic Shield front cover, which is proprietary to iPhone and harder than any other smartphone glass, and are water and dust resistant.

Powerful Camera Upgrades Enabled by Photonic Engine

With a new 12MP Main camera with a bigger sensor and larger pixels, a new front TrueDepth camera, the Ultra Wide camera to capture more of a scene, and Photonic Engine for a huge jump in low-light performance, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus set a new bar for picture and video capture.

Photonic Engine boosts mid- to low-light performance for images across all cameras by up to 2x on the Ultra Wide camera, 2x on the TrueDepth camera, and an amazing 2.5x on the new Main camera, thanks to a deep integration of hardware and software. Photonic Engine delivers this remarkable gain in quality by using Deep Fusion’s computational advantages early in the image process to give amazing detail, preserve delicate textures, provide richer colour, and retain more information in a shot.

Dual-camera system upgrades and features include:
  • A new Main camera with a larger ƒ/1.5 aperture and 1.9 µm pixels, enabling photo and video improvements in all lighting scenarios for better detail and motion freezing, less noise, faster exposure times, and sensor-shift optical image stabilization.
  • A new front TrueDepth camera with an ƒ/1.9 aperture that enables better low-light performance for photos and video. Using autofocus for the first time, it can focus even faster in low light and capture group shots from farther away.
  • A new Action mode for incredibly smooth-looking video that adjusts to significant shakes, motion, and vibrations, even when video is being captured in the middle of the action.
  • The Ultra Wide camera, offering a unique perspective for wider shots and improvements to low-light photos with Photonic Engine.
  • An improved True Tone flash that is 10 percent brighter and has better uniformity for more consistent lighting.
  • Cinematic mode, now available in 4K at 30 fps and 4K at 24 fps.
  • End-to-end Dolby Vision HDR, available only on iPhone.

Crash Detection and Emergency SOS via Satellite

The iPhone 14 series as a whole provides ground-breaking safety features that can give emergency help when it counts most. Collision Detection on iPhone can now identify a serious automobile crash and immediately summon emergency services when a user is unconscious or unable to access their iPhone, thanks to a new dual-core accelerometer capable of detecting G-force values of up to 256Gs and a new high dynamic range gyroscope. These capabilities expand on existing components such as the barometer, which can now detect changes in cabin pressure, the GPS for extra input for speed variations, and the microphone, which can distinguish loud sounds characteristic of serious automobile accidents. Even improved accuracy is provided by advanced Apple-designed motion algorithms trained on over a million hours of real-world driving and collision record data. Crash Detection, when paired with Apple Watch, effortlessly harnesses the unique strengths of both devices to swiftly get people aid. When a catastrophic accident is detected, the emergency services call interface appears on Apple Watch since it is closer to the user, but the call is sent via iPhone if it is in range for the best available connection.

The iPhone 14 series also has Satellite Emergency SOS, which combines bespoke components closely linked with software to enable antennas to connect directly to a satellite, allowing communicating with emergency services while outside of cellular or Wi-Fi coverage. Satellites are moving targets with limited bandwidth, and communications might take minutes to arrive. Because every second matters, iPhone front-loads a few critical questions to evaluate the user’s position and tells them where to aim their phone to connect to a satellite using Emergency SOS via satellite. The first inquiry and subsequent communications are then sent to centers manned by Apple trained professionals who may contact Apple on the user’s behalf. While there is no cellular or Wi-Fi connection, users may manually communicate their position with Find My via satellite, offering a feeling of security when trekking or camping off the grid. Emergency SOS via satellite will be accessible to consumers in the United States and Canada in November, and it will be free for the first two years.

A15 Bionic: A Powerhouse with a 5-Core GPU

The A15 Bionic chip boosts the performance of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. The 5-core GPU is still faster than the competition at any price, enabling even smoother graphics for video apps and high-performance gaming, as well as powering incredible camera features like Photonic Engine and Cinematic mode, all while delivering impressive battery life and protecting privacy and security with the Secure Enclave. The 6-core CPU performs demanding tasks quickly and effectively, while the 16-core Neural Engine can do 15.8 trillion operations per second, allowing for even faster machine learning calculations for iOS 16 features and third-party app experiences.

Powerful Connection Capabilities

iPhone users can keep in contact, share, and enjoy content with faster downloads and uploads, improved streaming, and real-time communication with 5G. Support for 5G on iPhone is currently available from over 250 carrier partners in over 70 countries, with enhanced support for independent networks. eSIM enables consumers to connect to or rapidly transfer their current plans digitally, is a more secure alternative to a physical SIM card, and allows users to utilise several cellular plans on a single device. For US versions, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus eliminate the SIM tray, allowing consumers to set up their smartphones more quickly and simply.

Apple Fitness+ for All iPhone Users

Later this fall, for the first time ever, Apple Fitness+ will be available for all iPhone users to subscribe to and enjoy in the 21 countries it is offered in, even if they don’t have an Apple Watch. iPhone users will have access to the entire service featuring over 3,000 studio-style workouts and meditations, all led by a diverse and inclusive team of trainers. Fitness+ users will see onscreen trainer guidance and interval timing, and estimated calories burned will be used to make progress on their Move ring. Fitness+ will be fully integrated with the Fitness app coming with iOS 16 and located in the middle tab, where users can stay motivated to close their Move ring through awards, activity sharing, and more. Users only need an iPhone to sign up, and can then experience Fitness+ on iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV.
