One of the gripes that users had about Apple’s Face ID is that the security feature did not work when you tried to unlock the device while wearing a mask. As an alternative, Apple soon allowed users to unlock their iPhone with their Apple Watch, but then again, not every iPhone user has an Apple Watch, so the solution was good but not exactly all-encompassing.
Looks like the tech giant has finally decided to take this complaint seriously and with masking rules here to stay, for the time being, it seems that the company is now internally testing a Face ID feature that will allow you to unlock your iPhone even when you are wearing a mask.
Apple released the first beta of iOS 15.4 and it looks like in the Face ID section, there is a new window that allows you to enable unlocking your phone while wearing a mask, albeit at the cost of reduced security. According to pictures of the screen, Apple says that the “iPhone can recognize the unique features around the eye area to authenticate” but warns that Face ID is going to be more accurate if you have it set to not work with a mask.
The only catch seems to be that the feature will only work for iPhones 12 and above. So if you have an older Apple device, you may not get this feature after all.
