Apple’s highly anticipated augmented reality (AR) headset, the Apple Vision Pro, is set to debut in early 2024. However, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter, there are already reports of exclusive features that will be reserved for the second generation of the device. These features are expected to address certain limitations and enhance the user experience.
Gurman highlights three main features that will be exclusive to the second-generation Apple Vision Pro:
- Multiple Mac Desktop Screens: Currently, when connected wirelessly to a Vision Pro, users can only view one Mac desktop screen at a time. The upcoming iteration will enable users to simultaneously view multiple desktop screens, enhancing productivity and multitasking capabilities.
- FaceTime Conference with Multiple Personas: The first-generation Apple Vision Pro will only support one-on-one FaceTime calls with Personas, the customizable avatars introduced by Apple. The second generation, however, will enable FaceTime conferences with several Personas, allowing for more interactive and engaging group conversations.
- Enhanced Fitness+ Workouts: While the initial release of Apple Fitness+ on the Vision Pro will include meditation sessions, the second generation will introduce virtual fitness content. Users will have access to immersive workouts that integrate AR technology, providing a more dynamic and interactive fitness experience.
In preparation for the product’s launch, Apple has been conducting tests and offering demos to its employees and analysts. Feedback from these tests has revealed a couple of concerns. Some users have expressed dissatisfaction with the headset’s weight, stating that it feels too heavy after a few hours of continuous use. Additionally, a few users reported experiencing motion sickness, although Gurman notes that this issue appears to be less severe compared to competing headsets.
Apple is still working on finalizing the visionOS system for the Vision Pro. Gurman mentions that there is considerable work to be done regarding the rollout strategy, such as supporting third-party apps, 3D video content, and refining the EyeSight feature. Certain user interface elements, including in-air typing, are still being developed, and compatibility with core iPad apps needs further adaptation to ensure a seamless experience on the new platform.
The exact release date for the first-generation Apple Vision Pro remains undisclosed, but Apple has stated that it will be available in the US in early 2024. Speculation suggests that the product might hit the market around May 2024. Looking ahead, Apple is already planning new iterations of the device, including more affordable options and premium second-generation models, expected to be released by 2025.
As Apple continues to refine and expand the capabilities of the Apple Vision Pro, further updates and insights about the device’s features and performance can be anticipated. BGR will provide ongoing coverage, delivering the latest news and developments surrounding this highly anticipated AR headset.
