Yoshua Bengio, a renowned pioneer in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), has joined other AI thought leaders in expressing deep concerns about the potential misuse of powerful AI technology. Bengio, along with Dr. Geoffrey Hinton and Professor Yann LuCun, received the prestigious Turing Award for their groundbreaking work in AI.
In an interview with the BBC on June 1, Bengio emphasized his worries about the risks associated with AI technology falling into the hands of “bad actors” such as military organizations, terrorists, or individuals with malicious intent. He highlighted the potential danger if AI systems are easily programmed to carry out harmful actions, as it becomes challenging to stop or prevent damage when these systems are more intelligent than humans.
