Added multiview streaming to YouTube TV just in time for March Madness

If you’re a sports lover, YouTube TV is now considerably more useful. Up to four sports streams can be seen at once on the service’s early access multiview functionality, which is currently being rolled out. You can choose from pre-selected multiview groupings, such as NCAA March Madness games, in the “Top Picks For You” section. For each game, you can switch the audio and subtitles to the stream that grabs your attention and move to a full-screen view.

It’s important to note that the technology is not constrained to any one platform or gadget. All smart TVs and media players for living rooms that can already run YouTube TV are supported. Unlike with certain services, you won’t require a powerful gadget. German Cheung from the firm adds that the secret is to relocate the processing to YouTube’s servers so that your hardware only needs to handle one feed, regardless of how many streams you are watching. The co-streaming function on YouTube is where the technology is taken.

You’ll receive an email and an alert if you’re a member of the early access group. Multiview streaming will be made available to all customers by YouTube TV in the “coming months.” According to the startup, it has long-term ambitions to add other features, such as the ability to tailor the stream selection.

The timing is suitable. The start of the MLB season is still weeks away, and March Madness has only just begun. If you’re choosing a TV provider (especially an internet-only plan) and are desperate to watch as many games as you can, multiview may make YouTube more alluring. If rival services don’t provide this kind of multi-stream support on your preferred living room equipment, the broad support may also be tempting. For example, the official March Madness Live app only allows four-way streaming online; you can only stream two streams offline.
