Mazda’s popular CX-5 SUV, which sold an impressive 365,135 units last year, was rumored to be facing an uncertain future due to the arrival of newer models. However, recent reports suggest that the CX-5 will indeed continue with a new, third-generation iteration.
While an official launch date has yet to be confirmed, Mazda has announced that the new CX-5 will join the CX-50 and larger CX-90 SUVs in showrooms. Similar to the current model, the upcoming CX-5 is expected to feature a four-cylinder engine, front-wheel drive as standard, and optional all-wheel drive.
One significant change anticipated for the new Mazda CX-5 is the inclusion of a hybrid powertrain. Drawing inspiration from models like the Toyota RAV4 and Corolla Cross, it is likely that Mazda will offer a hybrid variant of the CX-5. This move aligns with the fact that Toyota owns a five percent stake in Mazda, and the two companies have collaborated on various projects, including the production of a Japan-market Mazda 3 hybrid. Notably, both the Toyota Corolla Cross and Mazda CX-50 are manufactured at the Mazda Toyota Manufacturing plant in Huntsville, Alabama.
Earlier, Mazda had revealed plans to introduce three electric vehicles, five plug-in hybrids, and five conventional hybrids by 2025. However, the specific models that will incorporate these powertrains have not been disclosed. There are also rumors of Mazda exploring the use of rotary engines in hybrid vehicles. The company has hinted at the possibility of offering a rotary engine hybrid version of the CX-30 in the US, and patents have been filed for a sports car featuring a rotary plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) setup.
It is important to note that the rotary engine in the CX-30 will not directly power the wheels. Instead, it will function as a generator to recharge a 17.8 kWh battery, providing an electric-only range of up to 53 miles. Jeff Guyton, Mazda’s North American CEO, expressed that the return of the rotary engine to the US market has not been ruled out, but the immediate focus is on launching the CX-30 in Europe and Japan.
The upcoming third-generation Mazda CX-5, along with its potential hybrid powertrain, signals Mazda’s commitment to offering a diverse range of efficient and environmentally friendly options. With its reputation for stylish design and engaging driving dynamics, the CX-5 is poised to continue captivating SUV enthusiasts while embracing the advancements of hybrid technology.
