2023 Toyota Hilux GR Sport II Unveiled with Enhanced Off-Road Abilities and Sporty Upgrades

Toyota's Popular Hilux Pickup Receives the GR Sport Treatment for the Second Time in the UK, Featuring Off-Road Improvements and Sporty Aesthetics

The venerable eighth-generation Toyota Hilux, which made its debut in mid-2015, is getting a second dose of the GR Sport treatment in the UK. Following the initial GR Sport version introduced in early 2022, the 2023 Hilux GR Sport II combines a series of cosmetic and mechanical enhancements. However, as a lower-tier GR Sport model, it doesn’t receive any power upgrades.

Like its predecessor, the new Hilux GR Sport II is available exclusively as a double cab model. It features a suspension lift that raises the pickup’s ride height by 20 millimeters (0.8 inches), while the front and rear tracks have been widened by 140 mm (5.5 inches) and 150 mm (5.9 inches), respectively. The truck rides on new 17-inch lightweight wheels fitted with all-terrain tires. Off-road capabilities have been improved, with the approach angle increasing from 29 to 30 degrees.

In addition to these changes, the 2023 Hilux GR Sport II comes equipped with new monotube dampers for more responsive performance on rough terrain. The pickup also benefits from enhanced stopping power, thanks to larger front disc brakes, replacing the previous rear drums with disc brakes. Minor aerodynamic improvements have been implemented, including new air curtains at the front, while the rear features a more streamlined sport bar and bed cover.

To distinguish it from standard Hilux models, the GR Sport II receives a mesh grille, red brake calipers, and various dark accents. The sporty theme extends to the interior, with GR logos on the front headrests and red seatbelts. Standard equipment includes an eight-inch infotainment system with built-in navigation, as well as both wired and wireless support for Apple CarPlay. Android Auto is available through a wired connection.

Under the hood, there are no changes as the Hilux GR Sport II continues to be powered by the 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine, delivering 201 bhp and 369 pound-feet (500 Newton-metres) of torque through a six-speed automatic transmission. In select markets, Toyota offers a more potent Hilux GR Sport with 221 bhp and 406 lb-ft (550 Nm) of torque.

Toyota UK will commence sales of the 2023 Hilux GR Sport II early next year, with deliveries scheduled for later in 2024.
