Guess what, Zoom just made its way to your Apple TV with the new ‘Zoom – for HomeTV’ app! Now, if you’ve got a second-gen Apple TV 4K or a newer model, you’re all set to dive into video calls on the big screen.
Whether you’re hustling in a boardroom or chilling in your living room, this Apple TV app’s got you covered. You can join ongoing calls and kick off new ones right from your TV. It’s got all the bells and whistles too – in-meeting chat, breakout rooms, and seamless calendar integration, making it as powerful as the regular desktop deal.
But, and there’s always a but, to get this on your big screen, you’ll need a bit more Apple magic. They’re tapping into the Continuity Camera feature introduced with iOS 17, so you’ll need a compatible iPad or iPhone to play the role of an external webcam. Toss in a stand or MagSafe attachment to keep that ‘camera’ steady, and you’re good to go.
This nifty feature rolled out for FaceTime users back in September 2023, following the trend of smart TVs using plug-in cameras for video chats. What sets Apple apart is their slick wireless setup, making use of gear most folks already have.
And Zoom’s not stopping at Apple TV – they’re weaving their app into all sorts of tech realms. There’s Zoom Rooms, and get this, they even have an app for some Tesla in-car touchscreens (though it goes voice-only when the car’s on the move).
Now, if you’re vibing with other platforms, don’t fret. Zoom plays nice with the likes of Google Meet. And who knows, Google and Microsoft might just cook up their own Apple TV apps soon. The video conferencing game keeps getting more interesting!
