Windows Recall Feature Arrives for Insider Preview Users

After a lengthy delay and rounds of adjustments, Microsoft’s Windows Recall feature is now available for testing – albeit under specific conditions. The feature, part of the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.2415 (KB5046723), can currently be accessed by users enrolled in the ‘Dev Channel.’ However, it requires a Copilot+ PC powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip, leaving Intel and AMD users waiting for a future update.

What is Windows Recall?

Windows Recall is designed to capture snapshots of your PC’s screen every few seconds, enabling users to locate previously viewed content or related items efficiently. While this might sound straightforward, its development has been clouded by concerns over privacy and security.

Microsoft has implemented several safeguards to address these issues. The feature automatically detects sensitive information, such as credit card numbers or passwords, and refrains from capturing those details. Additionally, users can exclude specific apps and websites from being included in snapshots.

The snapshots remain entirely local, with Microsoft emphasizing that they cannot access or restore encrypted data if the user removes Windows Hello or resets their PC.

Setting Up and Using Recall

To try Recall, users must opt-in and complete a setup process that outlines its capabilities. Features like “Click to Do” – which works in tandem with Recall – allow users to interact with text or images within snapshots, performing tasks such as initiating web searches or applying edits to photos. For instance, the tool can blur parts of an image or erase unwanted objects.

Users retain full control over their snapshots, with the ability to delete entries individually. Feedback options are also integrated into the feature, reflecting Microsoft’s commitment to refining it before a broader rollout.

What’s Next for Recall?

Currently labeled as a preview, Recall is expected to receive additional updates before reaching consumers. While the feature is available now for Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ devices, broader hardware compatibility will follow as development progresses.

For those eager to test Recall, full installation instructions are available on the Windows Insider blog. As with any preview software, expect occasional bugs or performance issues, so it’s advisable to avoid installing it on a primary device.
