Windows 11 Preview Build Introduces New Settings Homepage and Enhanced Backup Capabilities

Microsoft’s latest preview build for Windows 11, numbered 22631 in the Beta channel, brings in two significant features that aim to save users time and enhance the overall user experience.

One of the key highlights of this build is the introduction of a revamped Settings homepage. This feature, which has been in development for a while and previously seen in earlier test channels, presents users with an organized dashboard of status details and information panels. The top section displays essential information such as the PC’s name, internet connection status, and the latest Windows Update status. Below this, various information panels, referred to as ‘cards,’ provide quick access to relevant details.

These cards encompass a range of topics, including cloud storage information related to OneDrive, personalization options for changing the Windows theme or color mode, Xbox details such as Game Pass subscription status, and a Bluetooth devices card that facilitates easy management of wireless peripherals.

The second major addition is an enhanced backup system that aims to simplify the process of restoring a Windows 11 environment to a new PC or recovering from system crashes. The Windows Backup app enables beta testers to back up their PCs. During the restoration process, the app preserves settings, customization preferences, taskbar and Start menu pins, and Microsoft Store apps. While third-party apps from external sources retain their pins, users are directed to download the relevant installer from the web when launching these apps for the first time.

Additionally, build 22631 introduces the ability for Windows 11’s accent color to sync with RGB peripherals, a feature known as Dynamic Lighting. This feature enhances the visual coherence between the operating system and compatible hardware.

In summary, the focus of this update is on time-saving and convenience. The new Settings homepage streamlines access to customization and common settings, reducing the need to navigate through various submenus. The improved backup system ensures that users can effortlessly restore their personalized environment in the event of a system recovery. As these features progress to the Release Preview channel, they are likely to be included in the Windows 11 23H2 update anticipated later this year.
