WhatsApp is expanding its multi-device functionality, allowing users to access their account from up to four phones simultaneously. The feature, which has been in testing since 2021, will be available to all WhatsApp users in the coming weeks.
To use the feature, users can tap on the “link to existing account” button when installing the app on a new phone. They will then be prompted to scan a QR code on their primary phone, which can be found in the “Linked Devices” section of the Settings menu. Alternatively, WhatsApp will be rolling out a new, more accessible method for linking companion devices, which will involve using the platform’s web client to send a one-time code to the phone being added to the account.

Once linked, users can receive messages and calls on their secondary phones without their primary device needing to be nearby or turned on. However, if the primary phone is inactive for more than 14 days, users will be logged out of their other devices. Users can also manually log out of companion devices from their primary phone.
WhatsApp assures users that each linked phone will connect to the app independently, ensuring that personal messages, media, and calls are end-to-end encrypted. The company plans to bring the new, easier linking method to other devices in the future.
