What is a secret chat on Telegram and how to start one with your friend

Telegram messenger is a cloud-based instant messaging app available for iOS, Android, and PC. The platform sees billions of messages going to and fro with some messages even being saved as drafts on the cloud server. This is great for the platform, but the problem starts when we start receiving hundreds of notifications on our devices.

Popular apps like Whatsapp and Signal have now taken a steep lead in the online messaging app race, but one of the rather underdog apps out there is Telegram. Yes, this app has been in the market for a while now, but its popularity has only just started to soar. Telegram does offer a level of security and protection to its users. However, while end-to-end encryption is offered by default for every chat on WhatsApp and Signal, it is only provided for secret chats on Telegram.

What is a secret chat on Telegram?

Speaking of secret chats, let’s take a closer look at what this feature offers users.

A secret chat, on Telegram, is a feature that has been introduced to give users an extra layer of privacy for their conversations on the platform. Enabling this feature converts the conversation between you and your contact into a full end-to-end conversation. This means that no one, not even Telegram, can intercept or spy on your messages and files that you share.

On top of this, Messages cannot be forwarded from secret chats. And when you delete messages on your side of the conversation, the app on the other side of the secret chat will be ordered to delete them as well.

Once the content you have shared with your content has been opened, you can order the same to self-destruct after a set amount of time. The message will then disappear from both your and your friend’s devices.

All secret chats in Telegram are device-specific and are not part of the Telegram cloud. This means you can only access messages in a secret chat from their device of origin. They are safe for as long as your device is safe in your pocket.
