Western Digital, the data storage giant, has finally provided a partial workaround for its customers after a week-long service outage caused by a security issue. However, the company continues to struggle with a complete fix for the issue. The outage, which affected the company’s cloud platform, began on April 2, with Western Digital promising to restore access to all affected services as soon as possible. Despite the company’s initial promise, it did not provide any details of the outage or a solution to the problem.
Now, the company has released a partial fix that addresses the issue for My Cloud Home, My Cloud Home Duo, and SanDisk ibi users. These customers have been instructed to enable local access for their NAS drives by using their favorite browser to connect to the device’s dashboard, enabling the Local Access feature, and creating a new Local Access account. The company has confirmed that all customers with a PC can regain access to their files through this workaround.
The cause of the outage remains unconfirmed, but there has been speculation that it is related to a security incident that was identified on March 26. The attacker is believed to have gained unauthorized access, but Western Digital has declined to comment on this. The company has implied that it is working on understanding the extent of the data breach. Western Digital continues to make every effort to restore all services as quickly as possible and has promised to provide updates as soon as they become available.
