Volkswagen is jumping on the Tesla bandwagon by adopting Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) for its electric vehicles. Come 2025, subsidiaries like Audi, Porsche, and Scout Motors will be rocking the NACS in their North American EVs.
But that’s not all – VW’s thinking about the folks already cruising around in their existing models. They’re mulling over the idea of tossing in some adapters so these drivers can hitch a ride on Tesla’s Supercharger network. And let me tell you, there’s a whopping 15,000 Supercharger stations scattered across North America waiting to juice up those EVs. VW’s electric wonders won’t just be limited to Tesla’s hotspots; they’ll also be able to recharge at over 3,800 DC fast charging spots managed by Electrify America and Electrify Canada.
It’s not just Volkswagen making this move – a bunch of other car big shots are also jumping on the NACS train. GM, Volvo, Polestar, Mercedes, Honda, BMW, Lucid, and a bunch more are all waving their flags, promising to get in on NACS charging within the next couple of years.
On a different note, ChargePoint got the memo early and started sprinkling NACS support across its EV charging network back in October. And if you’re an Electrify America fan, they’re planning to roll out the NACS connector at their stations by 2025 too. Looks like Tesla’s charging solution is quickly turning into the go-to standard for the EV crew.
