Twitch launches Hype Chat: Pin your message to the top of chat for a price

In a move that echoes similar functionalities on platforms like YouTube, Twitch has unveiled its chat-pinning feature called Hype Chat. This feature not only offers a nostalgic nod to the past but also presents an opportunity for both streamers and the platform to generate additional revenue. Let’s delve into how Hype Chat works and its implications for the Twitch community.

For a fee ranging from $1 to $500, users can compose a message that remains prominently displayed at the top of the chat until another user with a higher bid replaces it. The duration of the message’s prominence and the number of characters allowed for composition increase with the amount paid. Moreover, high-paying participants gain access to various design options to make their messages more eye-catching and attention-grabbing for their favorite streamers.

Streamers have the ability to set the price for pinned messages, with Twitch retaining a 30 percent share of the revenue and the remaining 70 percent going to the creator. Initially, only high-profile streamers, specifically Twitch Partners, will have access to this feature. Twitch’s rationale for this exclusivity is to ensure that pinned messages effectively stand out in fast-paced conversations with numerous participants. However, it is worth noting that Partners are unable to opt out of this service, as reported by The Verge.

Given the inherent challenges of dealing with offensive and discriminatory language on the internet, Twitch is implementing robust safety tools to accompany this feature. Similar to the regular Twitch chat, there are site-wide bans on specific words and phrases, along with the ability for individual creators to set their own restrictions. Additionally, if a user is banned from a chat due to inappropriate behavior, their pinned message will be removed as well. All messages transmitted through this feature undergo screening by Twitch’s AutoMod system, and human moderators retain the authority to delete messages as needed.

While the feature is currently rolling out exclusively for approved partners on the web app, Twitch has plans to extend its availability to smartphone and tablet applications in the near future. This expansion aims to ensure a consistent experience across different devices for users.

With the introduction of Hype Chat, Twitch seeks to enhance engagement and interaction between streamers and their audiences while providing a fresh avenue for monetization. By prioritizing safety measures, Twitch aims to foster a positive and inclusive community experience.
