Thinner, Faster RAM Revolution: CAMM2 Approved as the New Standard for Laptops

Brace yourself, laptop lovers – thinner, faster RAM is coming to juice up your next portable PC.

An industry group just approved a new slim RAM form factor called CAMM2. This means the chunky SO-DIMM sticks we’re used to will soon be replaced by svelte CAMM2 modules in laptops.

CAMM2 started as proprietary tech from Dell, reports Tom’s Hardware. Dell first used it in a laptop under the original CAMM name. It’s 57% thinner than SO-DIMM and lets RAM run way above 6,400MHz speed limits.

Now that the standard has been ratified, CAMM2 can spread beyond Dell. Future generations of DDR5 and LPDDR5 RAM will likely adopt this petite new shape and size.

While today’s fastest DDR5 uses clunky SO-DIMM, soon we’ll see speed demon DDR5 and LPDDR5 RAM sticks rocking the CAMM2 form factor instead. CAMM2 also means soldered RAM could get phased out in laptops.

We may even see future RAM like DDR6 or HBM4 embrace CAMM2 down the road once standards are set. But computing memory is evolving so fast, CAMM2 could just be a stepping stone.

Apple and Samsung are already researching integrating RAM right onto motherboards next to processors. This would enable blazing fast data movement within systems for a speed boost.

For now, CAMM2 spells excellent news for portable power users. With laptop performance hampered by bulky SO-DIMM RAM, slim and speedy CAMM2 modules could help liberate the true potential of mobile computing.

Dell proved the promise of this game-changing form factor. Now with CAMM2 standardized, RAM makers can reshape laptop memory for a more mobile future. Get ready for on-the-go systems that are thinner, faster, and more efficient than ever before. The laptop performance revolution is coming – and it’s CAMM for the win!
