According to Bloomberg, development on the planned Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic adaptation for the PS5 and PC has been put on hold. Earlier this month, the game’s art director and design director were both sacked when the production team gave a preview of the game to Lucasfilm and Sony.
The Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) reboot was initially unveiled during Sony’s major autumn display in September, but developer Aspyr Media, which is owned by Embracer Group, has yet to provide a release date. The remake has been in production for three years, and although the initial aim was to release the game by the end of 2022, reports say that a more “realistic deadline” is now 2025.
Saber Interactive, another Embracer Group firm, is also assisting with development, and reports suggest that “several at Aspyr think” Saber may eventually take over. Aspyr, Embracer Group, and Sony did not respond promptly to requests for comment.
While the first KOTOR was published in 2003 and created by BioWare, Aspyr is well-versed in both the game and its successor, having worked on versions of both. According to Aspyr’s Ryan Treadwell in a PlayStation Blog post, some of the original KOTOR crew is also on board for the remake. When it is released, the game will be a PS5 system exclusive.
The KOTOR remake is simply one of several major Star Wars games currently under development. Respawn Entertainment is producing a sequel to Jedi: Fallen Order, Quantic Dream is developing Star Wars: Eclipse, and Amy Hennig’s new company is developing an “original tale in the renowned Star Wars galaxy.”
