The 5 Best Compact Saloons of 2022

Number 2. BMW 3 Series

The recently refreshed seventh-generation “G20” BMW 3 Series continues to be the top choice in the compact executive car segment. For the past 40 years or so, the 3 Series has established itself as the go-to compact saloon for those buyers who value exquisite handling, dynamic performance, and genuine driver appeal. Only the Jaguar XE and Alfa Romeo Giulia have come close to the 3 Series in these areas. The 3 Series has also been given subtly sharper looks on the outside and an interior overhaul that includes the latest technology, such as a large touchscreen infotainment system.

However, what sets the 3 Series apart from its competitors is its engines, which offer a superior blend of performance and efficiency compared to other cars in its class. The cabin is also practical, well-built, and sophisticated, both in terms of materials and technology. While the 3 Series’ firmer, more insistent ride may not appeal to everyone, it remains the standout choice, particularly in the six-cylinder 330d or four-cylinder 320d versions.

The 320d was awarded a full five-star rating when it was road tested in 2019 for its excellent combination of speed, drivability, efficiency, refinement, and handling poise. The plug-in hybrid 330e will be of interest to many fleet drivers, but its inability to achieve a claimed 40 miles of electric range puts it in the 12% BiK tax bracket. It remains our favorite hybrid executive saloon of its size.
