Tesla Launches Affordable Model S and Model X Versions with Reduced Ranges

Tesla has introduced new “Standard Range” variants of its Model S and Model X vehicles, offering slightly more affordable options compared to their base and Plaid counterparts. These new variants come with lower prices but also shorter ranges and slightly slower acceleration times.

The Model S Standard Range is priced at $78,490, while the standard Model X is listed at $88,490. These prices are $10,000 less than the base versions of the vehicles. The Model S Standard Range has a range of 320 miles, compared to the base variant’s 405-mile range. Its acceleration time from 0 to 60 mph is 3.7 seconds, slightly slower than the base version’s 3.1 seconds. Similarly, the new Model X Standard Range has a range of 269 miles, while the base variant can travel 348 miles. Its acceleration time to 60 mph is 4.4 seconds, compared to the base version’s 3.8 seconds.

It’s unclear whether Tesla is using different battery packs for these new variants or if it’s software-locking the battery packs to limit their ranges. If it’s the latter, there might be an option for customers to unlock longer ranges through paid upgrades in the future.

These new Standard Range vehicles come in Pearl White with an all-black interior and standard wheels and steering wheel. Customizations, other colors, and additional features like Enhanced Autopilot and Full Self-Driving Capability come at an extra cost.

Tesla is also offering current customers the opportunity to transfer their Full Self-Driving Capability to a newly purchased vehicle for free. This offer is available for deliveries made between July 20th and September 30th, 2023. However, buyers of the new Standard Range vehicles who receive their deliveries after September might need to pay for Full Self-Driving Capability again if they wish to transfer it.
