Elon Musk’s internet-from-space service, Starlink, is informing users that their monthly fees have been cut in accordance to “local market conditions.”
The price reduction comes at a time when everything else is becoming more costly as a result of inflation. “The price reduction takes into account your local market conditions and is intended to represent parity in purchasing power among our consumers,” according to the notice.
Others have reported comparable savings in other parts of the world. On Reddit, for example, a user in the United Kingdom reported a monthly cost drop to £75 (down from £89), Mexico to $1,100 MXN (down from $2,299 MXN), and Germany to €80 (down from €100). Users in Chile and Brazil have reported price discounts of up to 50%. A quick look through Starlink’s various service websites in each nation backs up the aforementioned statements.
The picture is murkier in the United States, where the dollar has been soaring versus other currencies. A customer in Nevada claims to have received a discount of $85 (down from $110), yet Starlink’s websites still display a monthly membership fee of $110 after a one-time $599 purchase of the hardware kit. Several additional persons claiming to be from the United States state that they have not received any price reductions.
So far, there has been no word of a decrease in performance or the implementation of severe data limitations as a result of the lowered subscriptions.
