Tap to Pay was first unveiled by Apple in February 2022, and it initially supported Square’s competitor Stripe. Payments made through the Shopify POS app are also supported by the relationship with Stripe. The Tap to Pay function is presently only available on iPhone models XS and later, and with the Square dongle needing consumers to have cards or phones that allow tapping to pay, it’s unlikely to go away anytime soon. Its allure for many vendors is the ease with which it allows them to accept new forms of payment. For many Square users, the dongle may still be the best option.
