Spotify Rumored to Bring Group Listening Sessions to Desktop PCs

Spotify is reportedly gearing up to introduce group listening sessions on desktop PCs, a feature that has long been available on mobile devices. While the news is still a rumor, a Reddit user by the name of OhItsTom shared a screenshot of the feature in action on a desktop PC, and Chris Messina on Mastodon discovered references to the functionality in the code of the desktop Mac app.

According to sources, the group listening sessions will be cross-platform, allowing Spotify Premium users to connect with friends regardless of the device they are using, be it desktop or mobile. Additionally, users will be able to share control over the session, allowing anyone to choose which songs are played.

On mobile devices, starting a remote group session on Spotify is a straightforward process. Users simply need to locate the “Devices” icon (depicted as a speaker) at the bottom of the screen, tap on “Start a remote group session,” and then invite friends to join. Once the friends receive the link, the music-filled party can commence.

While the implementation may be basic, it is a highly anticipated addition for desktop users who have long been awaiting this feature, especially since it has been available on mobile devices for three years. Although there are existing options, such as the Spicetify tool, which allows customization for group sessions on desktop, having an integrated feature directly from Spotify would offer a more seamless and user-friendly experience.

It is expected that the group listening sessions will initially roll out in the United States and Canada, with a wider release possibly taking some time. However, the arrival of this feature on desktop PCs is a positive development that will enable Spotify users to connect with a larger community of friends and enjoy music together.
