Spotify has halted operations in Russia, as the country’s invasion of Ukraine enters its second month. In a statement, the corporation appears to cite Russia’s new law punishing those who distribute false information about the military with up to 15 years in prison as the key reason for its withdrawal from the nation.
Spotify previously pulled content from Kremlin-backed sources RT and Sputnik and closed its Russian headquarters, but this new action takes things a step further by completely shutting down the streaming service in the country. Additionally, the corporation announced in March that its paid subscription service would be discontinued in Russia.
Other technology companies have also suspended operations in Russia in protest of the country’s invasion of Ukraine. Russia, on the other hand, has taken certain measures of its own, including blocking Meta’s Facebook and Instagram accounts.
