Spotify, the renowned music streaming service, is currently conducting a test that involves the removal of its lyrics feature from the free tier of its mobile app. Several users on the free tier reported encountering a message when accessing the app, which stated, “Enjoy lyrics on Premium,” and prompted them to consider upgrading to the paid subscription tier.
The lyrics feature, available to Spotify subscribers, provides live song lyrics that synchronize with the currently playing track, akin to karaoke-style displays. Alongside this, Spotify is examining the possibility of relocating other features behind a paywall, including its premium-only AI DJ feature. This AI DJ feature offers personalized playlists with occasional AI-generated voice breaks, simulating a DJ’s presence.
CJ Stanley, Spotify’s co-head of global communications, clarified to The Verge that this move is currently in the testing phase. Stanley emphasized that Spotify frequently conducts tests to enhance the user experience, and some tests may result in significant changes while others serve as valuable learning experiences.
The motivation behind potentially removing the lyrics feature for free users remains unclear, but it raises questions about Spotify’s efforts to drive more users toward its premium subscription tier. As of the second quarter of 2023, Spotify reported impressive growth, with monthly active users reaching 551 million (a 27% increase) and subscribers totaling 220 million (a 17% year-on-year increase). This means that approximately 60% of Spotify’s user base utilizes the free tier, potentially accessing the lyrics feature. In an attempt to boost revenue, Spotify has also increased its premium prices.
Furthermore, Spotify is grappling with the costs associated with white noise podcasts, which have proven to be an expensive venture, costing the company $38 million. While there have been discussions about removing these podcasts, they currently remain on the platform.
Spotify has long promised the introduction of a hi-fi tier offering high-resolution audio streaming to compete with other services like Tidal. Rumors suggest that Spotify HiFi may launch later this year as a “super-premium” tier. This raises questions about whether additional features may become exclusive to premium subscribers.
It is important to note that the removal of the lyrics feature is currently in the testing phase, with no specified duration. Free users affected by this test will have to await further developments and hope for the eventual return of the lyrics feature.
