Skoda Fights Back: 2024 Superb Revealed, A Lifeline for Regular Cars

Skoda Unveils the Next-Generation Superb with a Twist of Modernity

The automotive world has been dramatically reshaped by the surge in SUV popularity, leading to the discontinuation of many traditional car models. Volkswagen Passat, Opel/Vauxhall Insignia (Buick Regal), and Ford Mondeo/Fusion are some of the casualties, although they linger on in the Chinese market where local production persists.

Skoda, however, refuses to let the era of conventional cars fade away and is ready to introduce another generation of its flagship model, the 2024 Superb, equipped with combustion engines. This new Superb will be mechanically related to the 2024 Passat Variant and is set to make its official debut on November 2. While the timing might seem curious amid the wave of electric vehicle premieres at the Japan Mobility Show, Skoda is determined to keep the torch burning for traditional cars.

As seen in previous spy shots, the 2024 Skoda Superb presents an evolution in its exterior design. It exudes the sense of a substantial facelift rather than an entirely new generation model. The new Superb boasts dimensions of increased length and height, though it is slightly narrower than its predecessor. This reconfiguration translates into even more generous interior space for passengers and cargo, reinforcing the Superb’s reputation for roominess.

The interior of the 2024 Superb is where a more significant transformation is evident. Skoda has implemented three rotary knobs with built-in miniature screens, reminiscent of the Audi TT. These highly customizable knobs allow seamless access to a wide array of functions, reducing clutter on the center console. The dashboard still features traditional controls but is dominated by a substantial 13-inch infotainment screen. Accompanying this is a 10-inch digital instrument cluster, with the option to include a head-up display for added convenience.

Skoda is all set to offer a diverse range of powertrains for the 2024 Superb. Customers can choose from gasoline, diesel, and plug-in hybrid options, with a choice of front- or all-wheel drive. Regardless of the selected powertrain, all variants will employ a seven-speed DSG transmission, except for the plug-in hybrid model, which will feature a six-speed DSG. A noteworthy change is the relocation of the gear lever to the steering wheel column, freeing up more space between the front seats.

In a perfect world, the Volkswagen Group would introduce Skoda to the United States, offering a compelling choice for customers who favor traditional cars over SUVs. However, given the discontinuation of the Passat in 2022, it remains uncertain whether sedans with combustion engines have a place in the U.S. market.

On a positive note, the electric ID.7 is set to arrive in the United States, bringing an electrified option to American consumers. Nevertheless, hopes for the 2024 Superb reaching the shores of the United States might be somewhat distant.

Skoda’s relentless commitment to the 2024 Superb showcases their determination to preserve traditional car offerings in an ever-changing automotive landscape, catering to those who still cherish the classic charm of combustion-powered vehicles.
