Rumored iPhone 15 to Lack 120Hz Display and Always-on Support, Sources Say

The iPhone 15 series should be released in the same manner as the iPhone 14. At least, that’s what the majority of rumours claim. The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus will have similar features to the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max. Meanwhile, the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max will include significant improvements.

There will be one significant change between the 2022 and 2023 iPhone lines. The Dynamic Island look and functionality will be shared across all iPhone 15 models. But, the lesser versions are said to still lack 120Hz OLED displays, which allow features like ProMotion and the Always-on display.

The iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max have LTPO screens with dynamic refresh rates ranging from 1Hz to 120Hz. This allows Apple to add ProMotion compatibility to the iPhone without affecting battery life. The phone understands when to increase the refresh rate, reducing energy use. iPhone owners may increase the maximum refresh rate to 60Hz for even longer battery life.

The Always-on display capability is also made possible by the dynamic refresh rate. Using the functionality, the screen will refresh at 1Hz while remaining on to display Lock Screen widgets and notifications. While the function still wastes energy, turning it off will improve battery life even further.

One reason Apple restricts 120Hz displays to more costly Pro versions is expense. Particularly if reports about the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus being cheaper are true.

Nevertheless, as MacRumors points out, well-known sources may already have divulged the true reason why Apple won’t be able to equip all iPhone models with 120Hz displays this year.

Chinese display manufacturer BOE will not be able to provide LTPO panels for iPhones until at least 2024. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, a dependable Apple insider for many years. Display expert Ross Young also said that because to manufacturing restrictions, Apple will be unable to use LPTO screens on all 2023 iPhone models.
