Polestar, a subsidiary of Geely, has revealed its latest electric SUV, the Polestar 4, at the Shanghai Auto Show, and it’s a showstopper. With a 102kWh battery and over 300 miles of targeted range, the SUV boasts both all-wheel and rear-wheel drive versions and starts at $60,000. The 544 horsepower model can accelerate from zero to 62MPH in 3.8 seconds.
Design-wise, the Polestar 4 has a sleek and sporty design, and while it lacks a rear window, it has a standard full-length glass roof that stretches below the rear occupants’ heads. The interior is roomy and inspired by fashion and sportswear. The high-definition screen up front displays the view from the rear camera, allowing for “a far wider field of view than what can be experienced in most other cars.” However, Polestar may need a backup system if the camera or screen malfunctions.
The Polestar 4 is built on Geely’s open-source Sustainable Experience Architecture and will not have a third row like the Tesla Model Y. It will, however, offer generous interior proportions for both front and rear passengers. The SUV runs NVIDIA’s Drive computing platform, using 12 cameras, one radar, and 12 ultrasonic sensors for its driver-assist system (ADAS).
Other features include a 10.2-inch instrument cluster, a 14.7-inch heads-up display (HUD), and an infotainment system powered by Android Auto installed on a 15.4-inch center screen, with Apple CarPlay available as well. The optional Harman Kardon audio system includes 12 speakers and a 1,400-Watt channel-hybrid amplifier.
The Polestar 4 will launch in China by the end of the year and in North America in 2024. Pricing starts at $60,000 in the US, but it is not yet clear whether it will qualify for the $7,500 US tax credit. Polestar has not announced details about North American production, but it will need to assemble the SUV in North America to qualify for the tax credit.
