Pixel 8 Pro Could Ditch Curved Display for Flat Screen

For those intrigued by Google’s Pixel Pro lineup but hesitant about curved displays, the upcoming Pixel 8 Pro may pique their interest. According to a report from Android Authority published on Saturday, Google’s next flagship smartphone will feature a flat display, addressing a common concern among potential buyers.

Building on the camera upgrades we discussed last week, leaker Kamila Wojciechowska reveals that the Pixel 8 Pro will boast a 6.7-inch OLED panel sourced from Samsung. The display will offer a resolution of 1,344 x 2,992 and a pixel density of 490 PPI. While slightly smaller than the current Pixel 7 Pro’s curved display, which measures 6.71 inches with a resolution of 1,440 x 3,120 and a pixel density of 512 PPI, the Pixel 8 Pro’s screen is expected to provide significantly improved brightness. It will reach 1,600 nits of peak brightness when displaying HDR content, compared to the Pixel 7 Pro’s 1,000 nits. The 120Hz panel will also offer smoother transitions between refresh rates.

Meanwhile, the Pixel 8 is set to receive its own display upgrade. Surprisingly, the device will reportedly sport a smaller screen compared to the Pixel 7. Android Authority suggests that the phone will come with a 6.17-inch display featuring a resolution of 1,080 x 2,400. This maintains the same resolution as the Pixel 7’s 6.31-inch screen but offers a higher dot pitch. The Pixel 8’s screen is also expected to provide 1,400 nits of peak brightness, an improvement from its predecessor, and a 120Hz refresh rate instead of the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7a’s 90Hz. The decision to opt for a smaller display on the Pixel 8 may be related to rumors that the Pixel 7a could be the last in Google’s a-Series lineup.

According to Android Authority, both the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro will feature more rounded corners, making them easier to handle with one hand. This aligns with previous reports from leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer. With these new display enhancements and the rumored larger primary camera sensor, Google’s upcoming smartphones are shaping up to be impressive offerings. More details about the devices are expected to emerge in the coming weeks and months leading up to their anticipated release later this year.
