NVIDIA’s Ampere Workstation Holds Promise for Developers Seeking a Brighter Future

Ampere, a chip-making company, has launched a new developer kit, the Altra Dev Kit, aimed at software creators. The kit is designed to be used for industrial embedded applications that require long life, low failure rates, and strict revision control.

The Altra Dev Kit is based on the Altra and is available in 32-core, 64-core, and 80-core formats costing $2,003, $2,518, and $2,621 respectively. The modules feature SoCs with either 32, 64, or 80 64-bit ARMv8.2 cores, which run at 1.7GHz, 2.2GHz, or 2.6GHz, respectively. The COM-HPC Server base offers two M.2 connectors, four USB 3.0/2.0 ports, and up to three x16 and two x4 PCIe slots, while a Gigabit Ethernet LAN port and GPIOs complete the Dev Kit’s connectivity, allowing up to 768GB of DDR4 memory.

Ampere is also offering a pre-built Developer Platform with the same number of cores, priced at $3,250, $4,200, and $4,784, and a 128-core version for $5,658. The Dev Platform comes with Ubuntu Server OS and is compatible with other operating systems. The kit requires a 750W power unit, but Ampere is offering an optional liquid cooling assembly.
