Nvidia Takes Aim at AMD with Rumored RTX 4070 and 4080 Super GPUs

Performance and Pricing Speculations Could Challenge AMD's RX 7900 Lineup

Nvidia appears to be gearing up for a potential showdown with AMD as rumors swirl about a trio of revamped graphics cards. The alleged RTX 4070 and RTX 4080 Super GPUs are generating quite a buzz, with speculation on pricing and performance that could potentially give AMD’s popular RX 7900 models a run for their money.

Moore’s Law is Dead (MLID), a well-known YouTube leaker, recently shared insights into these “Super” variants in one of his latest videos. It’s crucial to note that pricing decisions remain in flux, as is typical for the industry until closer to launch.

Here’s the nitty-gritty: MLID provides potential names, specifications, performance expectations, and price ranges for these GPUs, all of which have been the subject of much discussion in the GPU rumor mill.

According to MLID’s sources, the anticipated cards are likely to include an RTX 4080 Super 16GB and an RTX 4070 Ti Super 16GB, both using the AD103 chip. Additionally, a standard RTX 4070 Super 12GB, featuring the AD104 chip, is also on the horizon. The “Super” naming convention, including the ‘Ti Super,’ which has raised some eyebrows in the past, appears to be gaining credibility.

Notably, there’s a dismissal of earlier speculations that the RTX 4080 Super might employ the AD102 GPU (with 20GB of VRAM) rather than the AD103. MLID argues that a trimmed-down version of the AD102 chip would not be suitable for the RTX 4080 Super, as even chips with faulty cores that don’t meet the requirements for the RTX 4090 could find better use elsewhere, potentially in Nvidia’s RTX 5000 (Ada Generation) GPU designed for AI and professional applications.

As for specifications and prices, MLID presents a range of possibilities, from a more conservative scenario to a best-case scenario.

Worst-Case Scenario:

  • RTX 4080 Super 16GB, 5% to 10% faster than RTX 4080, priced at $1,199 to $1,249.
  • RTX 4070 Ti Super 16GB, about 10% slower than RTX 4080, priced between $849 and $999.
  • RTX 4070 Super 12GB, priced between $649 and $699.

In this scenario, there’s also speculation that the existing RTX 4080 might be discontinued to accommodate the new models.

Best-Case Scenario:

  • RTX 4080 Super 16GB, 10% to 15% faster than RTX 4080, priced between $999 and $1,119.
  • RTX 4070 Ti Super 16GB, within 5% of RTX 4080 performance, priced at $799 to $899.
  • RTX 4070 Super 12GB, closely matched to the RTX 4070 Ti in terms of performance, priced at $599 to $649.

In this optimistic scenario, the discontinuation of both the RTX 4080 and 4070 Ti is contemplated, as these cards may struggle to find their place in the product lineup given the projected price-to-performance ratios.

While these speculations are exciting, it’s important to remember that these are just rumors, and the actual products may vary from the information presented by MLID. However, if these scenarios materialize, it could result in an intense battle between Nvidia and AMD in the high-performance GPU market.
