MSI admits data breach in wake of ransomware attack, offers free identity protection services to affected customers

MSI, a leading Taiwanese computing hardware company, has suffered a ransomware attack, as confirmed by a report filed with the Taiwanese Stock Exchange. Although the company hasn’t provided many details about the incident, it did reveal that its IT department detected information systems being attacked by hackers, after which it initiated information security defense mechanisms and recovery procedures. Additionally, MSI has reported the anomaly to the relevant government authorities.

The extent of the attack remains unclear, and it is unknown when it occurred or what systems and endpoints the company had encrypted. MSI stated that the cyberattack did not have a “significant” financial or operational impact on its business, but it has warned users to obtain BIOS and firmware updates from official sources only. Despite the attack, the company is enhancing the information security control measures of its network and infrastructure to ensure data security.

Recently, the Money Message ransomware gang claimed to have infiltrated some of MSI’s systems and stolen files, which it will leak online next week if the company doesn’t pay a $4 million ransom. While MSI hasn’t specified who was behind the attack, it’s known that a threat actor called Money Message had breached MSI’s systems and requested the ransom not to publish the files.
