Microsoft’s recent announcement that it was halting all feature updates for Windows 10, signalling the OS’s “effective death”, may have been premature. The company has since released a new build, Version 19045.3030, with minor tweaks to the search box in the taskbar and toast notifications. These are slated to arrive soon on the full version of Windows 10 following the Release Preview channel tests.
While the news of small feature additions is not guaranteed to be ongoing, it’s worth noting that Microsoft’s previous announcement was only concerning major updates, not minor tweaks. The company stated that Version 22H2 would be the final version of Windows 10, with monthly security updates until October 14, 2025. That doesn’t exclude small changes to the OS, however.
The new Release Preview build includes mostly bug fixes, with the two minor feature tweaks being the only notable changes. This development could be seen as one last hurrah, as Microsoft’s announcement implies that monthly security updates will be the only thing piped to Windows 10 from now until October 2025.
The minor feature additions may not be enough to get Windows 10 users excited, but it’s at least some good news. Users can take solace in the fact that the company is still working on the OS, albeit in a limited capacity. It’s unclear whether these minor feature tweaks will be an ongoing development, but for now, it’s good to know that Microsoft hasn’t completely abandoned Windows 10.
