Microsoft experiments with enhancing the functionality of the Print Screen button

Microsoft is shaking up the default function of the Print Screen button in an upcoming update for Windows 11. Traditionally, pressing the button captures an image of your entire display and saves it to your clipboard. However, the latest Windows 11 Insider Preview builds will see the Print Screen button launch the Snipping Tool instead, allowing users to take a snapshot of a specific section of their screen.

The Snipping Tool provides more flexibility than the Print Screen button, with rectangular and freeform modes that enable you to capture just the content you need. But for power users, the change may not be an improvement. The Print Screen button is often tucked away on keyboards and may be less convenient than using the existing Snipping Tool shortcut (Win key + Shift + S).

If you’re an Xbox Game Bar user, it’s worth noting that the app can take a screenshot instantly without requiring extra steps. However, you’ll still need to use the Print Screen button (Win key + Alt + Print Screen) to activate it. For those who prefer the traditional functionality of the Print Screen button, it’s easy to change the default setting back through the accessibility settings in Windows 11.

Microsoft is currently testing the Print Screen button change and will be monitoring user feedback. If necessary, it may reverse course and retain the traditional functionality of the button. Nonetheless, offering more options for the button’s use could prove a helpful update for many Windows 11 users.
