Mick Schumacher: ‘I’m always ready for action’ as he targets F1 comeback

Mick Schumacher, the former Haas driver and current reserve at Mercedes, has expressed his readiness to return to Formula 1 and stated his willingness to drive for Williams if given the opportunity. While waiting on the F1 sidelines, Schumacher remains determined and confident that he will secure a race seat for the upcoming season.

Schumacher recently had the chance to sample the 2023 machinery during Pirelli tyre testing at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain. Despite not securing a race seat this year after being dropped by Haas, the young driver is fully committed to earning his place back on the grid and is optimistic about his prospects.

“I’m always ready for action,” Schumacher affirmed during an interview with RTL. “Believe me, I’m working very hard to hopefully be back in the car soon. See you very soon, next year at the latest. I’m sure something will develop in the near future.”

Regarding the possibility of joining Williams, Schumacher expressed his willingness but acknowledged the likelihood of contractual obligations preventing such a move. He believes that any team would be a good option for him at this stage of his career.

As Mercedes’ reserve driver, Schumacher holds a favorable position, considering the team’s connections with multiple customer teams. This alignment could potentially place him closer to the front of the queue for future driver opportunities.

Furthermore, the recent departure of Mercedes personnel and the appointment of James Vowles as the new Williams team boss create a favorable scenario for Schumacher. However, a few challenges stand in his way.

Firstly, Logan Sargeant, Williams’ own academy driver in his rookie season, is being given the opportunity to justify the team’s investment in him. If Sargeant faces challenges, Williams may exercise patience and support his development. Additionally, Sargeant is performing relatively well compared to Alex Albon, who has received upgrades ahead of Sargeant. The young American driver will have to wait for the upgrades to be applied to his car in upcoming races.

Secondly, being off the grid prevents Schumacher from showcasing his skills behind the wheel and presenting himself as a desirable option for teams. In Formula 1, race results and performances are crucial in attracting attention and opportunities.

Although both Haas drivers this season have shown that comebacks are possible in the sport, they possess more experience than Schumacher. This was a contributing factor in Guenther Steiner’s decision to choose Nico Hulkenberg for this year. If Schumacher secures a drive with Williams, he would have a strong teammate in Albon, providing an opportunity for healthy competition.

While Schumacher appears to be a stronger bet than Sargeant at this point for a Williams seat, it is important to note that there is still ample time for the rookie driver to improve and challenge Albon more consistently throughout the season.
