Meta is bringing Messenger back to the Facebook app

Facebook (before it was Meta) controversially removed Messenger from the Facebook app around ten years ago. If you wanted to keep using Messenger on your phone, you had to download the standalone Messenger software. “Each app can only concentrate on doing one thing well,” Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg remarked at the time.

Meta seemed to be changing her mind after almost 10 years and a name change. In a blog post on Facebook’s future, Tom Alison, Head of Facebook, said that the company is presently “testing the ability for individuals to access their Messenger inbox inside the Facebook app,” and that testing will soon be expanded to even more users.

“Over the next year, we’ll create new methods to integrate messaging functions in Facebook,” Alison wrote. “Ultimately, we want it to be simple and convenient for people to connect and share, whether in the Messenger app or directly inside Facebook.”

Meta did not provide an ETA for when in-app chat would be accessible to the general public. Presumably, since that the corporation is comfortable discussing it publicly, it won’t be long until more of us gain access to Messenger via the Facebook app.
