Mediatek debuts an all-new mobile processor to take on Qualcomm

In the smartphone world, the word Snapdragon has set itself as a gold standard, with others playing catch up. However, if the latest news is anything to go by, it looks like the competition is about to get real as Mediatek has come out with an all-new mobile processor that aims at taking the Snapdragon processor head on.

The company claims that the new processor, named the Dimensity 9300 has much better performance and handles power consumption a lot better than the Dimensity 9200. This, coupled with TSMC’s 3rd-generation 4nm+ technology makes it a much more potent combination, better suited at taking a swing at the Snapdragon. To drive home the point, Mediatek has also revealed key benchmark scores, which shows that the Dimensity 9300 processor is on par with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor.

Dimensity 9300

Featuring Mediatek’s ‘All-Big Core Architecture’, the Dimensity 9300 boasts eight cores total—four ultra-large cores and four big cores, all focussed on one aspect – PERFORMANCE. In contrast, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 features five huge Cortex-A720 cores and two smaller Cortex-A520 cores in addition to one ultra-large Cortex-X4 core to balance performance and energy efficiency.

But how much more performance does the Dimensity 9300 produce in comparison to the existing Dimensity 9200 chipset?

If the numbers are to be believed, the Dimensity 9300 produces 15% better performance at the same power level and draws 33% less power at the same performance level. Mediatek says that it also permits 40% more peak performance. Additionally, they claim to have an AnTuTu score of 2,130,000+, which is comparable to the AnTuTu score of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. But it doesn’t just stop there.

On specific gaming evaluations, MediaTek claims a 46 percent increase in GPU performance over the previous generation at the same power levels and higher frame rates. It also outperforms the Dimensity 9200 in terms of deep learning capabilities, thanks to the new APU 790 AI processor, which has up to 8 times the processing speed and can generate Stable Diffusion images in less than a second. This is incredible considering its a mobile processors. There are actual computer processors that struggle to achieve this kind of performance in terms of Deep Learning and AI image generation.

One more aspect where a mobile processor must shine, especially in today’s world, is computational photography and video. There is a sort of arms race going on in that respect and with the Dimensity 9300, Mediatek seems to be going for a kill. There is support for always-on HDR at 4K 60p, “real-time bokeh tracking” at 4K 30fps, AI processing on RAW photos and videos and support for the new Ultra HDR format in Android 14.

All in all, it looks like Mediatek has a winner in the Dimensity 9300 processor, atleast on paper. It will still be a while until there is a proper comparison test run between itself, Snapdragon and Google’s Tensor Chipset to see who the real boss is. Until then, stay tuned for more.
