Tesla has been spearheading the EV revolution around the world, and one of their offerings that has generated immense profit is there supercharger technology. The American EV maker has been making a neat profit by selling theit supercharger technology to other EV brands, but it looks like their monopoly may be coming to an end, thanks to their close rival, Lotus.
The British born carmaker, who is now part of the Chinese automotive brand Geely, has received some immense financial backing and are now preparing some innovative technologies that can take the fight to Tesla, and one of them, is liquid cooled superchargers.
Recently, Lotus took the first set towards this mission by introducing ultra-fasting charging stations that can deliver up to 450kW to those vehicles equipped to accept that kind of charging.
One of the automobiles that can accept this kind of charging is the Geely-inspired Lotus Eletre R, which, according to the company can give the driver a range of 142 km, with just 5 minutes of charge. Lotus is proud of their accomplishment, especially since other high power charging stations can deliver a maximum of 360kW.
Now 450kW is an insanely large amount of power to hold and to that effect, Lotus has developed liquid cooled charging cabinets that are best suited for spaces that require high energy in order to increase efficiency and minimize charging time, such as motorway rest stops,”.
There is also a more compact liquid cooled charging station that Lotus has designed, and this is meant for charging upto four vehicles at a time, and it has been designed to vary the charging speed depending on the hardware that the cars are equipped with. Not all cars have the 800V charging kit required for the super-fast charging.
Lotus has announced that they are expanding this network of liquid cooled super-fast charging stations and they will be opening it up for other maufacturers as well. If this works out, it will definitely be a big win for Lotus in their fight against Tesla motors and as for other manufacturers, the options will just be double.
Do you think this move will help Lotus claw back an advantage in their fight against Tesla? Let us know in the comments.
