Dr. J. Metz, Chair of the UEC, clarified that the goal is not to overhaul Ethernet but to optimize it to improve efficiency for specific performance requirements. The focus lies on standardizing protocols, data structures, network transport mechanisms, congestion control, telemetry, signalling, and various software, storage, management, and security constructs to cater to a diverse range of workloads, including AI, machine learning, and cloud computing applications.
While the vision may seem ambitious, Metz emphasized the consortium’s commitment to exploring every layer of Ethernet, from physical aspects to software layers, to achieve enhanced efficiency and performance at scale.
