Jack Dorsey is attempting to dispel suspicions that he would be reinstalled as CEO of Twitter once Elon Musk takes over. On Wednesday, he tweeted, “nope, I’ll never be CEO again,” in response to someone predicting he would return to run the company he co-founded, before stating that he did not desire the position.
Dorsey responds that “no one eventually” should be Twitter’s CEO, possibly referring to Bluesky, a project aimed at transforming Twitter into a decentralized protocol rather than a typical social network.
Dorsey has a difficult past with the Twitter leadership post. In 2008, the business’s board of directors removed him as CEO, only two years after he helped create the company (though he stayed on the board). He returned to the CEO post in 2015 after Twitter had gone through two prior CEOs, but in 2020, a group of investors on Twitter’s board began trying to replace him. They noted his split focus and lack of inventiveness, but Dorsey was able to keep his job. However, he resigned in November 2021 for reasons that remain unclear.
Following Dorsey’s resignation, Twitter’s CEO was Parag Agrawal. He doesn’t appear to be staying around for long at this point. Elon Musk is set to buy the firm and take it private (a saga that began with him only wanting to become a board member, then backing out of the deal), and he’s rumored to serve as interim CEO if the deal goes through. But Musk is a busy man who runs both SpaceX and Tesla, so it’s probable he’ll want to find someone else to take over.
People speculated that Jack could be Elon’s option, which made sense. Dorsey has recently been tweeting about Twitter, giving the impression that he is dissatisfied with the company’s trajectory (though he has sprinkled in enough good messages to keep us wondering). He also appears to agree with Musk on a couple of things regarding Twitter’s future.
Unfortunately, Jack appears to be done as CEO, stating that “it’s time to roll the dice again.”
