At the Apple event yesterday, Apple introduced a new Magic Mouse. It’s a sleek black variant. Additionally, the charging connector remains on the bottom — indicating that, six and a half years after its release, Apple appears to believe that the best method to power the mouse is to flip it over (thereby rendering it useless) and put in a Lightning cable.
The majority of rechargeable wireless mice allow you to plug them in and use them while they charge. However, Apple is adamantly opposed to placing a charging port somewhere else than beneath the Magic Mouse. The business has demonstrated a willingness to correct many of its other weird design errors — for example, the updated Apple Pencil does not require charging via a Lightning port, and the new Apple TV Siri Remote replaced the previous touchpad with a scroll wheel and a click pad.
Apple even put a couple of USB-C connectors and an SDXC card slot on the front of the new Mac Studio, reflecting Apple’s previous inclination to put ports in prominent locations. However, the underbelly charging port for the Magic Mouse remains.
To be fair, Apple states on its website that the Magic Mouse’s battery will “power your Magic Mouse for approximately a month or more between charges,” implying that you won’t need to plug the mouse in every week.
If, despite the unpleasant charging scenario, you still want the black Magic Mouse, you can get one from Apple’s website right now — but keep in mind that, like the new black trackpad, it’s $20 more expensive than the white one.
