At the Japan Mobility Show, Toyota showcased an impressive array of concepts, but one particular vehicle, the EPU Concept (Electric Pickup), garnered significant attention as it appeared ready for production. A recent report reveals that Toyota’s Calty Design Research Center in California has been diligently working on this electric pickup for three years. Yet, the project has not received the final green light for production.
Regional Push for Production: An unnamed executive from Toyota Motor North America spoke with Automotive News, indicating that their region of the company is strongly advocating for the EPU’s production. However, the ultimate decision rests with the Toyota Motor Corporation headquartered in Japan. The primary challenge appears to be achieving a cost that does not closely align with the Tacoma, thus maintaining affordability.
“We’re fighting for it,” stated the executive. “They know how much we want it. We just have to make it work.”
Calty’s Vision: Kevin Hunter, President of Calty, shed light on the EPU’s purpose. This electric pickup is tailored to customers seeking the utility of a pickup without the need for hardcore off-roading. The target audience includes more casual users and urban dwellers. Hunter emphasized that the EPU possesses sufficient capability, emphasizing that it’s not a mere “toy.”
Adaptive Cargo Bed: One standout feature of the EPU Concept is its adaptive cargo bed. In the standard configuration, it measures around 4.5 feet in length, similar to the Ford Maverick. However, the EPU includes a divider that opens into the passenger compartment, extending the bed’s length to about 6.0 feet. Furthermore, dropping the tailgate and raising a portion of it can extend the cargo space to a substantial 8.0 feet.
Sizing and Chassis: While the EPU might appear like a midsize truck in photos, its actual dimensions place it closer in size to the Ford Maverick. Both trucks share a monocoque chassis and a four-door body. The table below provides a direct comparison of their footprints.
Details Awaited: Notably, Toyota has not disclosed specifics about the electric powertrain or the battery system specifications for the EPU. These crucial details remain shrouded in mystery as the automaker evaluates the feasibility of bringing this innovative electric pickup to the market.
