Swedish furniture retailer IKEA is set to launch a new service that aims to assist customers with decorating and furnishing their rooms. The move is part of the company’s efforts to expand its service offerings, transitioning from customer self-service apps to one-on-one assistance provided by “IKEA designers”. The online service will be completely digital and will begin with a questionnaire on the IKEA USA site, followed by three video calls. Customers will receive a mood board and initial plans for the space, and will then have an opportunity to approve the ideas and products before receiving 3D renderings, a floor plan, and a list of products and material options.
IKEA already provides a similar service for kitchens, which includes a free appointment to measure and design the kitchen with the help of an IKEA kitchen planner. Anyone in the US can opt for an online meeting for this service as well. The new interior design service is offered at a cost, with meetings with an IKEA interior designer costing $99 per room for individuals and $299 per room for businesses. Despite the cost, the prices are relatively affordable compared to the average interior designer, who can charge anywhere from $50 to $500 per hour. While the service does come with a cost, IKEA profits from any furniture purchased through the service. Although IKEA’s offerings aren’t designer prices, they can still add up to a significant bill.
The company’s ownership of TaskRabbit, which connects customers with freelance workers for tasks ranging from handyman services to cleaning, will be utilized to connect customers with DIY experts who can assemble furniture ordered through the service. The new interior design service is expected to appeal to those who are looking for a more personalized shopping experience and a more efficient way to decorate their spaces without having to leave their homes.
