During the Japan Mobility Show, we saw major automakers revealing some incredible new vehicles, both in the electric and the conventional fuel variants. One of the announcements that was a bit quirky and definitely caught our attention, was the honda eMTB. This convertible mountain bike from Honda is aimed at giving the users a combination of motorcycling and mountain biking.
The exact specifications of this eMTB are pretty scarce as it seems to be more of a concept at the moment, but one thing we have been told is that Honda has sculpted the swingarm and frame, using thin-wall aluminum casting technology. Why this is important to note is because this technology has been reserved for the fabrication of some of Honda’s best and most powerful motorcycles.
Along with this stellar build, the eMTB also features some after market components such as the SRAM Eagle AXS drivetrain and Shimano disc brakes, as well as front and rear suspension from Fox and a dropper seat post. Now, we do not have a lot of information on the battery and motor setup, but it seems to be a very capable off-roading machine. While the Honda eMTB did catch eyebrows, what really took people’s full attention was the portable charging station that the bike was plugged into.
The portable charging station is designed like a stroller bag, and comes with all the paraphernalia that is required to charge the bike on the go. There are quite a few eletric bikes in the market, but none of them feature a charging station that you can literally carry with you on your travels, much like a power bank for your smartphone.
It is canny innovations like this, that makes Honda a force to be reckoned with in the EV market, and now that they have a working prototype ready to go, the possibilities are quite frankly, endless.
