Google Messages is rumored to be introducing generative AI features called Magic Compose, according to screenshots shared with 9to5Google and hidden code previously discovered in the app. Magic Compose is expected to enhance the existing smart reply functionality in Google Messages.
The screenshots reveal that Magic Compose will offer different tones for users to choose from, including Excited, Formal, and Lyrical. The Lyrical option even generates a response in the form of a short poem, based on a prompt provided by the user. It appears that Magic Compose can either start a response based on user input or generate a response independently by analyzing the conversation context. The screenshots also indicate that Magic Compose is labeled as an experiment.
The addition of generative AI features to Google Messages aligns with Google’s recent efforts to incorporate similar tools in other apps, such as Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Sheets.
The exact release date of this feature is yet to be announced, but it is speculated that Google IO 2023, scheduled for Wednesday, May 10, could be the platform for its announcement. Google IO is primarily a developer-focused event where Google unveils upcoming changes to Android, Wear OS, and various Google apps and services. In previous years, hardware announcements have also been made during the event.
Artificial intelligence is expected to be a prominent topic at Google IO 2023. Google has traditionally positioned itself as a leader in the AI field, but it has recently faced competition from rivals like OpenAI and Microsoft, who have launched highly advanced generative AI engines. Although Google introduced Bard, it has been playing catch-up in this area.
At Google IO 2023, CEO Sundar Pichai and his team are likely to showcase Magic Compose for Google Messages along with other AI-related advancements. As the age of AI continues to unfold, Google aims to regain its position as an industry leader by showcasing its advancements and innovations in this rapidly evolving field.
