Google Halts New Domain Registrations, Transitioning Customers to Squarespace

Google Ends Domain Sales to New Customers, Shifts Focus to Squarespace

In a notable shift of its domain business strategy, Google has officially suspended the registration of new domains through its Google Domains service. The company has posted a notice on its Google Domains website, redirecting potential customers to consider Squarespace for their domain registration needs. This move comes roughly three months after Google’s unexpected announcement of its plan to transfer its domains business to Squarespace, citing the need to refine its strategic focus.

Squarespace’s Acquisition of Google Domains Assets

On September 7, Squarespace announced the successful completion of its acquisition of the assets associated with Google Domains. New customers interested in domain registration are now directed to make their purchases through Squarespace, marking a significant change in Google’s approach to its domain business.

Transition Period for Existing Google Domains Customers

While Google has ceased new domain registrations, existing Google Domains customers will retain access to their online dashboards during an undisclosed “transition period.” Following this transition period, Squarespace will facilitate the migration of these customers to its own platform. Although TechRadar Pro sought clarification on the exact timing of this transition from Squarespace, no immediate response was received. Google’s statement indicates that customers and their domains will be transitioned “over the next few months.”

Seamless Transition and Service Continuity

Google has assured existing customers that their encrypted payment details will be transferred to Squarespace as part of the transition process. This commitment is aimed at ensuring a seamless transition without any interruption in the services previously enjoyed by Google Domains customers.

Squarespace’s Domain Business Expansion

Simultaneously with the acquisition, Squarespace announced its plans to significantly invest in and expand its domain business. The company expressed its intent to establish itself as a globally recognized, independent domain registrar. Squarespace envisions millions of new domain customers benefiting from its platform, simplifying domain management and empowering users to build a strong online presence.

Squarespace’s Vision for Domain Business

In a press release, Squarespace stated its vision to enhance its domains business, enabling customers to effortlessly establish and manage their domains. The company also intends to explore new avenues for building distinctive brands and launching online businesses. Squarespace offers domains under its brand, starting at a competitive price point of $12 per year. Additionally, customers on an annual plan with Squarespace receive one domain at no extra cost, making it an attractive option for businesses and individuals seeking an all-in-one web presence solution.

Competitive Landscape and WordPress.com’s Offer

As the domain registration landscape undergoes changes with Google’s exit from new domain sales, WordPress.com is positioning itself strategically. WordPress.com has announced its intention to cover the transfer fee for the first one million domains migrating from Google Domains to WordPress.com. This offer is expected to appeal to those considering a change in domain registration providers in the wake of Google’s shift in strategy.
