Google has introduced Project IDX, a browser-based artificial intelligence (AI) development environment designed to simplify the process of building full-stack applications. The project aims to streamline the multiplatform app development workflow and make it faster and more efficient.
Project IDX is built on Google Cloud and powered by Codey, a text-to-code foundation model built on PaLM 2. While it’s still in the early stages of development, Google has released information about the project to gather feedback from developers and understand their needs.
Developers will be able to import existing projects from GitHub and work with various frameworks, including Angular, Flutter, Next.js, React, Svelte, and Vue. The initial launch will support JavaScript and Dart programming languages, with plans to add Python and Go in the future.
Built-in previews will help developers optimize their apps for different platforms. Initially, only a web preview will be enabled, but a browser-based Android emulator and an embedded iOS simulator are in the works.
Project IDX will also include AI tools like smart code completion, an assistive chatbot, and contextual code actions. Google encourages developers to provide feedback and requests to help shape the service as it continues to evolve.
