Garmin, a well-known name in the world of navigation and communication technology, is no stranger to satellite connectivity. The company boasts several products already equipped with satellite communication capabilities, primarily harnessing the Iridium satellite network. It appears that Android is set to tap into this established system to facilitate its own satellite texting features.
The concept of satellite connectivity in smartphones, as demonstrated by the iPhone 14, isn’t aimed at streaming 4K videos; instead, it serves a critical purpose—sending emergency messages when conventional cellular networks are unavailable. Senior vice president of Android, Hiroshi Lockheimer, had announced almost a year ago that this feature would be incorporated into Android, and it now appears to be on the brink of becoming a reality.
