Google has rolled out an update to the Gmail user interface (UI) for Android devices with foldable screens, aiming to make accessing attachments and multitasking more intuitive.
This enhancement allows users to open links and attachments on “large screen Android devices” right beside the Gmail app. These larger devices include tablets like the Google Pixel Tablet and foldable phones such as the Google Pixel Fold.
In landscape orientation or when the device is unfolded, the Gmail app now supports multitasking, aligning with other Google applications like Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides.
In full-screen mode, emails are displayed on the right side of the screen alongside the inbox sidebar, which is positioned on the left. When opening a new window alongside Gmail, the email body shifts to the left, temporarily hiding the sidebar to make room for the new window on the right.
Google’s update empowers users to control the width of each window by dragging the central divider handle. Alternatively, they can stick with the standard 50:50 layout.
This improved multitasking experience, especially on larger displays, further cements Google’s position as a preferred choice for business smartphone users. Devices like the Pixel Fold strike a practical balance between portability and screen real estate, offering business professionals the convenience of on-the-go work without the need for an additional tablet.
Notably, besides Google Workspace apps, third-party developers have been optimizing their applications for widescreen support. Apps like Zoom, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Dropbox, Evernote, and Todoist have all adapted to leverage the benefits of larger displays.
Furthermore, Android 14, now available to a wider audience, has introduced numerous business-focused enhancements. These include improved security features and additional controls for fleet administrators, alongside various general updates and enhanced accessibility functionalities.
