Meaning – The term local, refers to a network with networking equipment or computers in close proximity to each other. Instead of a WAN (wide area network) or network that is spread across multiple locations or even around the world.
When referring to a file or storage medium, local refers to a storage location on the computer being used.
In networks, local refers to files, devices, and other resources at your workstation. Resources located at other nodes on the networks are remote.
Example of usage – “In a LAN or on the Internet, local refers to the computer you are using. As opposed to remote, which means off-site or “somewhere else,” local means on-site or “what’s in front of you.”
